How Does Stephen King Overcome the Fear of Writing?

Fear of Writing

The scariest moment is always just before you start.

Stephen king

This experience applies to all writers. The only difference is Stephen King starts. Most of us chicken out.

Beginning to write can be more painful than writing itself.

Think of an old car. It’s hard to start the car. You’ve got to make a few tries before you can get the engine started.

But once the engine is started, the car gets moving until the engine is stopped again.

So, admit the fact that it’s not always easy to begin to write, even if you’ve been writing for years.

But you can begin to write at any time, under any circumstances if you adopt any of these tactics.

When it’s time to write, you write. The worst thing you can do is sit down and think about what to write about.

Worse still is wondering whether what you’ll write about would be any good.

I’ve been writing for over three decades and I’ve come to terms with the fact that you can draw a blank when you begin to write. I expect to draw a blank when I start to write. But it almost never happens? Why? Because I throw caution to the wind and just start writing.

When I start writing, I end up reaching somewhere. And that somewhere is good enough for me, ost of the time.

So, what happens when I actually draw a blank? I don’t sit down and worry about finding a superb topic or whether I can write about the topic.

I write something I can and hope it goes somewhere. The logic is you got to settle for some writing instead of ending up with no writing at all.

If you can’t begin to write despite having an outline or knowing what to write, you can go into chat mode.

Imagine talking to a friend about what you’re going to write. Give yourself five or ten minutes to do this.

Imagine talking over the phone.

“Hey, I’m going to tell you about what I’m going to write. I’m going to write about how to begin to write. I have three ways that can make you begin to write. The first way is….”

Sounds childish or amateurish? It works. That’s what counts.

Although you may not be writing what you want to write, you’re writing something and that’s part of the process of beginning to write.

So, there’s only one sensible answer to the question ‘how do I begin to write’.

The answer is to be bold and start writing anything that comes to you without worrying about where it would lead you.

The most important thing is you’ve begun. Never mind the result.
